More Like Jenny From the Id, or Thoughts on The Cell

Jennifer Lopez has, more or less, enjoyed a successful transition from singer/diva to movie star, much more so than Madonna, and I’m just petty enough to petty enough to find that fact amusing.  And yet in spite of her mainstream cinematic appeal Jennifer Lopez still managed to make a couple horror movies, one where she fought a giant snake and The Cell (2000), where she enters the mind of a serial killer.
Jennifer Lopez is Dr. Catherine Deane, a child psychologist with an experimental psychic mind bridge suit that enables her to enter the minds of coma patients.  Vince Vaughn is Special Agent Peter Novak, who is chasing Vincent D’Onofrio (there were a lot of Vinces in this movie) as Carl Rudolph Stargher, the creepy serial killer who likes to suspend himself from hooks above his victims.  When Carl slips into a coma, guess who gets to figure out where his last victim is before she drowns?  Carl’s internal world looks suspiciously like a kinky art student who watched too many Nine Inch Nails videos, but the stunning visuals and arresting production design are the real stars of the movie.
With costumes by Eiko Ishioka, who designed the armor and wardrobe for Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula (1992) and music video director Tarsem Singh’s first film, who would go on to direct Immortals (2011) and Self/less (2015).
